Don’t Let Your Roof Suffer: 4 Tips To Help You Protect Your Flat Roof

If you own a commercial building in Arizona, you’ve got to be concerned about the condition of your roof. The scorching temperatures that can occur in Arizona can wreak havoc on your commercial roof, especially if your roof is flat. While flat roofs are an excellent choice for commercial buildings, they do require additional care, especially if you want to avoid damage. Here are just four steps you can take to protect your flat roof from the hot Arizona sun.

Avoid the Ponds

You might not think that ponding would be a problem associated with sun damage. However, that’s not actually true. In fact, ponding can lead to serious damage, and can speed up the damage associated with the heat. If the ponds on your roof don’t dry up fast enough, the added moisture can lead to mold growth, and heat rot, especially directly below the surface of your roofing material. To avoid the damage, take care to avoid ponding.

Watch Out for the Blisters

On the surface, blisters might just look like raised sections of your roof. However, it’s what’s under the surface that’s going to cause you the problems with your flat roof. You see, there could be pockets of moisture hiding under those blisters. As soon as you locate blisters on your flat roof, you should make a small incision in the material, firmly press the liquid out from under the blister, and then press the roofing material back into place. Repeat this process on every blister you encounter.

Secure the Fasteners

In addition to the searing temperatures you may experience in Arizona, you also have the wind to contend with. That wind could lift up your roofing material, causing the fasteners to lift up. Once that happens, your roof won’t be as secure as it should be. To make sure that your roof fasteners are in place, you should inspect your roof after each wind storm. Secure any fasteners that have come loose. Inspecting the fasteners after each wind storm, will also give you the opportunity to inspect the rest of your roof for signs of damage.

Consider a Protective Foam Seal

If you haven’t had a layer of foam applied to your flat roof, you’re missing the perfect opportunity to provide additional protection. Applying foam to your roof will protect it from sun and rain damage, as well as insulate it from the heat.

Don’t leave your flat roof exposed to the elements. Use the tips provided here to properly protect your flat roof against sun, wind, and rain damage.
