4 Protective Coating Options for Your Foam Roof in Phoenix AZ

Deciding on what type of coating is best for your roof is an essential step in making sure you get what works best for your roof. The most common roof coatings for both sprayed polyurethane foam and other roofs that are light in color are acrylic, silicone, polyurea and urethanes coatings. These coatings are applied as a liquid, then dry to form a strongly adhered, protective membrane.

1. Acrylic coatings are a cost-effective, specially engineered acrylic polymers for roofs. The coating is typically a white color, which helps reflect UV rays and up to 85% of the sun’s radiant heat, saving money on cooling costs. An additional benefit is the acrylic coatings do stand up to the expansions and contractions of your structure. On the downside, acrylic is not the top performer for resistance to water ponding, so if you may want to consider the other options if that is a known concern for your structure.

2. Silicone coatings are one of the more expensive options, but that is because they offer great benefits. Silicone is a UV resistant and reflective, impermeable substance that is elastic in nature. Not only is silicone the most durable, it is an environmentally friendly option as it is solvent-free and very low in VOCs. Silicone can hold dirt, however rain water can wash it away.

3. Polyurethane roof coatings are the most impact-resistant of all the coating options, so if you expect your roof to have a higher than average amount of traffic, polyurethane may be your best bet. There are two primary types of polyurethane roof coatings: aromatic and aliphatic. Aromatic coatings are typically used as a base coat because they are not UV stable. Aliphaltic coatings are UV stable, but more expensive. Additionally, aliphatlic coatings hold their color and tend to stay cleaner than other coating types.

4. Urethane roof coatings are strong, durable and adhere extremely well to most surfaces. Like polyurethane coatings, urethane coatings do quite well in high traffic areas. It is important to note, this option does have a strong odor when applied.
