Foam Roof Coating

SPF requires protection from the sun’s ultra-violet radiation, moisture and foot traffic. This coating helps to protect and seal the foam from any damage from these or other elements. Some types of roof coatings can even add strength to the roofing system and building structure.

Foam Experts will help you protect your investment. Once the spray foam (SPF) has been applied to the proper thickness and finish specifications, a protective layer of elastomeric coating, or gravel is applied. This protective layer produces a durable weather resistant surface and that can be walked on for normal maintenance.

Foam Experts will help you decide on the best coating possible. The most common cool roof coatings used over sprayed polyurethane foam (SPF) and other roof deck surfaces are light/white colored. The most common types are:

  • Acrylic Roof Coatings
  • Silicone Roof Coatings
  • Urethanes Roof Coatings
  • Polyurea Roof Coatings

Polyurethane foam is sprayed directly onto wall and floor cavities as a liquid and quickly transforms into thick, hard foam insulation. There are two categories of foam: half-pound open-cell foam and higher density two-pound closed-cell foam, which acts as a unique air and moisture barrier in one. Half-pound has certain uses like insulating interior walls, and it’s better than fiberglass, but it doesn’t compare to two-pound closed-cell, which does a better job of making a home airtight than other types of insulation. It’s also resistant to mould growth, unlike fiberglass and cellulose, which can trap unwanted moisture and organic material. Don’t be overwhelmed regarding this material because Foam Experts will help you decide what works for you.

Once the SPF has been applied to the proper thickness and finish specifications, a protective layer of elastomeric coating, or even gravel covering is applied. This protective layer produces a durable weather resistant surface and that can be walked on for normal maintenance.

An SPF roof, like most other systems, will expand and contract during different climate conditions. It is very important that the protective coating is able to expand and contract with the SPF or serious damage can result in the form of cracks or delaminating.
