The Advantage of Foam Roofs in Arizona

Foam roofing is composed of both polyurethane foam, a man-made material, and an elastomeric membrane. Polyurethane foam, also known as “foam roof”, is a thick viscous material having several applications. It is often used in foam roofing as a medium-density protective coating. A thin seamless layer of foam also applied to the roof surface, acts as a vapor barrier that prevents heat transfer from the attic to the rest of the home. This can keep your heating and cooling costs down even when you’re using relatively warm house-warming air conditioning.

Another advantage of foam roofing is that it reduces energy costs by reducing internal temperatures. That’s because heat rises, and this means that your attic becomes a hotter place than the outside. Excess heating or cooling causes the volume of the gases in the air to increase, which in turn brings with it an increase in indoor temperature. With foam roofs, however, this isn’t the case, and instead, the temperature inside the house stays constant because the viscosity of the foam reduces and therefore the amount of gas exchange and increase in temperature are reduced.

Closed-cell polyurethane foam roofing is an especially unique application, as it is the only type to use a silicone ingredient that forms a liquid barrier when applied. This liquid barrier helps block out UV rays while keeping the elements outside. The foam is sprayed into place, followed by a silicone sealant that forms a solid seal. This sealant helps protect the foam from rain, hail, and even snow. Once dry, the seamless roof is fastened onto the structure.
