Keeping Your Cool: Spray Foam Roof vs Traditional Roofing

Keeping Your Cool: Spray Foam Roof vs Traditional Roofing

There are a number of advantages to installing a foam roof instead of a traditional roof. While upfront costs may be more — especially when compared to cheap roofing materials, like asphalt shingles and tar paper — the lifespan and cost-effectiveness of a foam roof cannot be ignored.

One important factor to consider when choosing a roof is the material’s insulative properties. Traditional roofing materials include:

  • Shingles (asphalt, wood, and others)
  • Tiles (clay, concrete)
  • Slate
  • Metal

But, when considering a roofing material, it’s important to ask

How will your roof help you save money on cooling expenses?

This is an important question to consider, especially in very hot and arid Arizona desert environments.

Many traditional roofing materials offer a minimal thermal barrier, especially thin materials like asphalt shingles that do little more than repel water and block sunlight. Roofs that don’t offer a natural thermal barrier need to be installed with additional insulation, usually on the interior of the roof (attic), in order to keep your building’s environment comfortable and manageable.

This adds an unforeseen cost both in the short- and long-term, and is one that many owners wish they’d considered when choosing their roofing material.

Foam Roofing = Maximum Insulation

Foam roofing offers two types of barrier — thermal and air — which help you keep cooling (and heating) costs to a minimum.

A thermal barrier delays the change in temperature from one area to another, like from the exterior roof to the interior of a building. A spray foam roof creates a thermal barrier that reduces heat transfer up to 30%, greatly reducing the workload of your HVAC system.

Spray foam roofing also creates a solid, airtight barrier, which prevents the movement of air from outside to inside. Roof materials that are applied in pieces (like shingles and tiles) don’t provide this airtight seal, thereby allowing hot air to leak into your building and up your air conditioning costs.

Together, these insulative properties can give you as much as a 50% energy savings over traditional roofs installed with standard insulation materials.

Add in the low maintenance cost and longer lifespan, and it’s easy to see that spray foam roofing is the most cost-effective type of roofing you could possibly choose for your home or commercial building.
