Types of Foam Roofing

Foam roofing is composed of elastomeric liquid and polyurethane foam. Polyurethane foam has numerous industrial uses. It’s most often used in foam roofing because of its high-performance insulation properties. Typically, the elastomeric foam roofing membrane is an ultra-water-resistant membrane which is primarily designed to protect the roof from sun, rain, and snow.

For flat roof applications, foam roofs are available in a variety of compositions including hot-fill and SPF roofing systems. SPF roofing systems use a polyurethane block that contains spares of foam before the actual application, which helps ensure greater reliability compared to foam roofing systems without the filler. In addition, hot-fill foam roofs include an increased level of vapor resistance, increased stability, and energy efficiency.

Foam roofing also comes in the form of fiberglass, a material which is relatively less durable than other foam roofing materials. Fiberglass also does not offer the thermal insulation benefits of other materials such as polyurethane foam. These types of roofs are typically used for commercial applications because of their ability to provide superior weather protection and energy efficiency, making them a popular choice for both commercial and residential applications. In addition to their weather and energy efficiency benefits, fiberglass-based foam roofing offers a number of other advantages, including greater ease of installation and removal, and a shorter lifespan than traditional foam roofing.
