Now that you’ve spent thousands of dollars on a new roof for your building, you want to make sure it stays in excellent condition. However, shortly after getting a new roof, many people fall into bad habits that lead to a roof experiencing problems long before it should. If you don’t want to have this happen, here are a few things you should not be doing on your roof.
Don’t Use it for Storage
While a large, flat roof may look like a great spot to store various types of stuff not being used, the fact is doing so can and probably will lead to roof damage. By storing such things as lumber, unused HVAC repair parts, and various types of equipment, you are subjecting parts of your roof to unnecessary wear and tear.
Don’t Drain HVAC Condensate
If there is one mistake that is made very frequently by industrial facilities, it is draining HVAC condensate onto the roof of their building. In doing so, this keeps some parts of the roof much wetter than other areas, leading to many potential maintenance issues. Also, it’s important to not let any vents on the roof emit harmful substances, materials, or chemicals onto the roof’s surface, since this can also lead to severe damage.
Don’t Let Drainage Get Blocked
While not the most pleasant of tasks, making sure all of your roof’s drains and guttering are clear of debris can make a huge difference in how long your roof will last. If drainage areas such as these become blocked, it can begin to wear down roofing materials, especially in colder months.
Don’t Walk Around Unnecessarily
Finally, even though you will need people to be up on the roof for periodic maintenance, don’t have large numbers of people up there constantly if at all possible. Instead, limit the foot traffic on your roof only to people who absolutely need to be there.
