How to Find and Fix Roof Leaks

Roof leaks are a frequent occurrence for homeowners. Not only can they be costly, but they can cause extensive damage to your house as well. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to detect and address the issue before it gets out of hand.

Identification of the Root Cause of the Leak

Roof leaks can be caused by several causes. These include weather conditions, aging shingles, improper installation and more.

Wind and rainy conditions can wilt shingles and other roofing materials, leaving them more susceptible to leakage. Signs of this damage may include pools of water on the surface or discolored stains and patches on drywall.

If you find a spot where water is seeping, try running a hose over it to identify its source. Doing this will give an indication of where the leak is and give an idea of its path downward towards your ceiling.

It’s wise to inspect the vents in your attic and crawlspace for signs of water infiltration. Look for cracks or gaps in their gaskets, as well as missing nails or other defects which could allow water to seep in.

Another potential source of leaks is a clogged gutter. Gutters are designed to direct rain, snow, ice and other liquids away from your roof but they can become blocked with debris over time. When this occurs, water seeps down the side of your roof into an area beneath its shingles which could then lead to a leak in either your attic or crawlspace.

Make sure the gutters in your attic and crawlspace are cleaned regularly to prevent clogging and obstruction of water escaping from the roof. Remove leaves, dirt, and other materials that could clog them over time.

Examine Your Chimney For a Leak

Your chimney at home is an intricate structure and may need professional repair if there are any signs of water damage. If there’s evidence of leakage, hiring an experienced rooing professional to get the job done right is recommended.

Be sure to look for a sagging bulge hanging from the ceiling. This could indicate that there’s an under-wall leak or other problem with drainage.

This bulge is an indication that you need to seek a solution. Use a screwdriver to puncture the lowest point of the bulge and put a bucket underneath it to catch any leaks.

It is also essential to remove any shingles in the area. Doing so will enable professionals to pinpoint where the leak is and make it simpler for them to get to work.

Once you identify the source of the leak, contact your local roofing company to arrange an inspection and any necessary repairs. They should be able to pinpoint its cause and give you advice on how best to avoid future issues.

People, issues with seams, neglect, rooftop equipment and weather are the five primary causes of roof leaks. Prevention is always preferable to repair; by understanding which causes your roof is vulnerable to, you can create a strategy for avoiding future repairs.
