Tips for Maintenance of Your Foam Roof

Foam Roof Inspection TipsIf you have a foam roof, you should already know you’re in good hands. Foam roof advantages have been well-documented in the past. Most likely, it was this long list of advantages that convinced you to go with a foam roof in the first place. Nonetheless, just like any type of roof, those that benefit from foam also need to be properly maintained. Fortunately, the following tips for foam roof maintenance should make this easy enough.

Keep It Clean

All roofs need to be cleaned from time to time. At least once a year, you should get up there and take a look for yourself to make sure further foam roof maintenance isn’t needed. If possible, though, visit your roof once a season just to be on the safe side. It’s also wise to go to the roof after any major storm, just to be sure nothing was blown on top of it or otherwise damaged.

The good news is that most cleaning you can probably handle on your own. For example, clearing bird nests, leaves, tree branches and other forms of debris can easily be done by hand and will help protect your foam roof.

Luckily, a foam roof won’t attract vermin like rodents and insects, so you don’t have to worry that cleaning it will also mean potentially going to war with those little critters.

Always Check for Discoloration and Bad Texture

Whenever you’re up on your foam roof, check to see if any areas are looking discolored. You also want to pay close attention to the texture, which is why more than just cleaning is necessary for proper foam roof maintenance. You need to walk the entire structure and ensure that it still has a texture that is similar to that of an orange peel. Anything other than that should give you cause for concern. Typical signs of a problem are if the texture resembles popcorn of scrambled eggs, oddly enough. Either is usually a sure sign that your foam roof has been compromised somehow.

Of course, if you notice that the roof has been exposed in any way or is showing signs of deterioration beyond the texture problems we just mentioned, something is definitely wrong.

Remove Unnecessary Objects

Some people have furniture and other objects on top of their foam roof. While this may make the view more enjoyable, remember that these unnecessary items can also damage the very material you’re depending on. Put simply, the less you use the roof, the less the foam is likely to need repairs or further maintenance.

Don’t Recoat on Your Own

While foam roof maintenance is something you can handle on your own, recoating isn’t. The process may seem simple, but involves an intense and specific form of cleaning and the right materials used in the right amount. If you decide to try recoating on your own, you’ll almost certainly be inviting more problems.

Foam roof maintenance should be done regularly to guarantee you get a long life from this application. Just leave repairs and recoating to qualified professionals.
